Henry Weekes

Over two weeks in 2023 & 2024, I got the opportunity to be artist-in-residence at Brewery Studios in Berlin, collaborating with modular synthesist Jake Mehew. We worked on an album with field recordings at the centre of it, inspired by a collaboration Jake had done with mindfulness practitioner Rachel Massey and the University of Huddersfield (UoH). What was created was Radical Rest Retreat, an eight track album combining field recordings, synthesised sounds and acoustic instruments to create our world of sonic fiction. Below is an extract from the album sleeve note:

“Sound is emotion and recordings are the echoes of feelings felt in space. Recordings have the opportunity to transport us backwards, forwards or sideways to people and places that our memory has been hiding from us in plain sight. The everyday phenomenon of listening often gets overshadowed by our more dominant senses, yet the sonic world surrounding us still shapes our daily lives and affects us. From city streets to bird song, sounds have the power to transport us back in time to moments in our lives when we heard those sounds, or forward into an active imagination, creating protean fictional realities. Sounds heard uniquely to the individual experience, shifting every time it is experienced subjectively, speaking to us differently as our own experience of listening changes.”
